Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 2026

What Eats What ("WEW", "we", "us") is a food-chain explorer built for curiosity. This policy explains what we collect, why, and how you can control it. Plain language, no surprises.

What we collect

  • Animal searches. The names and queries you type into the search box are sent to our AI provider (Anthropic) to generate animal facts. We do not store your search history on our servers.
  • Life List & Favourite Animals. The animals you add to your Life List and Favourites are stored locally on your device using localStorage. We do not transmit this data to our servers unless you choose to sync.
  • Pet profiles. Pet names, breeds, and any photos you add are stored locally on your device. Photos you upload for AI identification are sent to Anthropic for processing and are not retained.
  • Wildlife sightings. If you opt in to the anonymous sighting feature, a species name, approximate location, and date may be stored in our database (Supabase) to power community heatmaps. No personally identifiable information is attached.

How we store data

Most WEW data lives on your device — close the browser and it stays there. If you use features that require cloud sync, your data is stored in Supabase with industry-standard encryption in transit and at rest.

Wildlife sighting data programme

We do not sell your personal data. With your explicit opt-in consent, we may share anonymised, aggregated wildlife sighting data (species identified, approximate location rounded to 1km grid, date, and habitat type) with conservation researchers, wildlife scientists, and licensed commercial partners. This data contains no personally identifiable information — your name, exact location, personal notes, and pet details are never included. You can opt in or out of this programme at any time in your account settings. We will always ask for your permission before your sighting data contributes to any research or commercial dataset.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell your personal information.
  • We do not serve targeted advertising.
  • We do not share identifiable data with third parties without your consent.

Cookies & analytics

We may use anonymous, aggregate analytics (e.g. page views) to understand which features are used. No personally identifiable information is collected through analytics. We do not use advertising cookies.

How to delete your data

Local data (Life List, pet profiles, favourites) can be cleared by clearing your browser's localStorage in your browser settings. To request deletion of any cloud-stored data, email us at hello@whateatswhat.com and we will respond within 30 days.

Children

WEW is designed for all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has submitted personal data, contact us and we will delete it promptly.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of WEW after changes means you accept the updated policy.
